Political Instability Returns to Mongolia as Ruling Coalition Fractures
A corruption scandal and economic headwinds break apart a rare period of stability.
Mongolia's governing coalition has collapsed less than a year after its formation, ending a period of relative stability under Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene. The ruling Mongolian People's Party (MPP) effectively ousted its principal partner, the Democratic Party (DP), despite the coalition commanding a supermajority and initially enjoying broader public support.
The immediate trigger appears to be public discontent fuelled by economic challenges and a corruption scandal involving the prime minister's family, which the MPP claims the DP exploited through criticism and support for protests.
